Working With Kids

Well I was baptized into the special needs school today.  I got peed on.  Luckily it only got my sock.  Kids really know how to get out of doing something they do not want to do.  I cannot even count how many times I have been peed on in my career as a PT.  It always gets a kid out of doing whatever they were supposed to be doing.  Today I was stretching the kid's shoulders and he did not like it so he peed.  I got the pee on my sock so I rinsed the sock and washed my foot.  I laid the sock in the sun to dry and put my shoe on without a sock.  Of course, then I walked home and forgot to put the sock back on.  While walking home I started to think of all the things kids have done to get out of working.  I have had many have gumby legs which are impossible to work with.  I have had a kid eat a penny, fall asleep, constantly ask for a drink, use the bathroom a hundred times and "accidentally" spill a drink on themselves.  A few have hit, bit or kicked me.  Many hide or run from me.  Some even banged their heads, but nonetheless, I love working with them.  The rewards far outweigh being peed on or avoided.  In the end, I have created a wonderful bond with the kids I have worked with and with their families.  I would not trade my career for anything.  Today was one of those days that reminds of that.  I worked with a little girl while her grandmother watched and she was so proud of the fact that the little girl was standing without support and she was able to bring a smile to the girl's face.  It just warms your heart to see the excitement.  I love working with kids.
