On the Go
Even though the people here seem very relaxed and peaceful, they are actually on the go a lot. It seems they always have places to go and things to do, but they always stop to talk to friends and sit peacefully when they need a break. At all times of the day, I go past people's houses and they are always working on something. They are cleaning, cooking, harvesting, selling, buying or walking somewhere. Yesterday I even saw a woman with her son tied on her hip breast feeding while she walked up hill to Conocoto. It sounds like a "I walked ten miles up hill in the snow to school" kind of story, but it is true. I was amazed. I will never cease to be amazed by the work ethic of the people here. I am amazed everyday. The other thing I noticed is many businesses are run by the whole family and one picks up when another cannot. Our favorite fruit stand is worked by young and old kids, mother and father, aunt, uncle, grandfather and grandmother all at different times. The families are so close as a result and they love each other's company. It makes me want to get a big complex of houses and have our whole family move in. We could help one another so much easier and spend time enjoying each other's company anytime we wanted. Maybe that is why the beach vacations were always my favorite times of the year and always will be. I love and miss everyone and look forward to another family get together.
